About Us

The Arson Task Force is a partnership between Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service & Northumbria Police. Since April 2006, is has been mainstreamed into the Police and Fire and Rescue Service activities. It covers the whole of Tyne & Wear with 5 Task Forces – one in each authority area.

Arson (the deliberate destruction of property using fire as a weapon) is a complex and serious crime that has become the largest single cause of major fires in the UK, and it is on the increase. At its worst, arson leads to loss of life, injury and significant financial damage. But even persistent minor arson sets a strongly detrimental tone to communities and contributes to social exclusion. This Task Force will ensure that the efforts of the Fireand Rescue Service Service and Police in this region are co-ordinated and will ensure a joined up approach to tackling the issue of arson and deliberate fires.

The primary aim of the Arson Task Force is to reduce deliberate fires.

Our targets for this year are:

  • To reduce deliberate vehicle fires by 5.6%

  • To reduce deliberate property fires by 4.5%

  • To reduce anti-social behaviour fires by 2.3%

Government targets use 2001-2 as a baseline year and are:

  • reduce by 10% the number of deliberate fires by 31st March 2010;

(These Government targets apply to deliberate fires in property and vehicles)
