11.1 Weekly Tests
(i) The provider/manager must ensure that the fire alarm system is tested each week by carrying out a test of one of the manual break glass units.
(ii) It should never be necessary to actually break the glass.
(iii) It is important to test a different break glass unit each week and in any event each unit should be tested at least once every six months.
11.2 Identified Defects
All defects must be reported immediately and remedial action taken.
11.3 Automatic Door Releases
Automatic door releases connected to, or operated by, the fire alarm system should be checked in conjunction with the fire alarm test to ensure that all doors are being released and closing fully onto the door rebates.
11.4 Electronic Security Devices
Doors fitted with electronic security devices that are required for escape purposes should be checked in conjunction with the fire alarm test to ensure that the securing device releases allowing the door to be opened.
11.5 Record of Tests
Details of tests must be recorded in the Fire Precaution Register which should be available for inspection at all times.
11.6 Annual Test
The provider/manager should ensure that an annual test of the fire alarm system is carried out and the engineer’s certificate of testing held in the Fire Precaution Register.
Fire alarm systems will be tested in accordance with the current British Standard Code of Practice.
