17. Automatic Sliding Exit Doors

17.1 Where automatic sliding doors are fitted, these should be of the type that ‘fails safe’, i.e. in the event of a failure of the main power supply or a failure of the locking mechanism, the doors are in a state whereby they either open or can be easily opened with minimal force.

17.2 A manual override should be provided adjacent to the door(s). This manual override may be in the form of a break glass switch (similar to a fire alarm call point, but of a different colour, preferably green), push button or push pad facility.

17.3 The doors should form part of the routine maintenance and testing with the results being recorded in the fire logbook. Maintenance should be strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions with engineer’s reports being held in the fire precautions register.
