Year One

The main aims of the year one lesson are to provide basic fire safety education and to introduce the role of the firefighter. A strong emphasis is placed on prevention of fire (including the dangers of matches and lighters), detection (smoke alarms) and escape plans (‘shout out, get out, get the Fire Service out’). The children are also taught what to do in the event their clothes catch fire (‘stop, drop and roll’) and then all the messages are reinforced by operational crews who attend with a fire appliance.

The programmes are designed to cause the least possible disruption to the schools timetable, by working with the school teachers, linking to curriculum subjects and visiting at an appropriate time for the school.

After a visit a letter is sent to the child’s parents or guardians explaining that their child has completed a fire safety course, and with their compliance they should complete a home fire safety check.
