The main aim of the year six lesson is to reinforce the key messages delivered in year one. The children learn about the triangle of combustion - to introduce basic science of fire, and watch a video which demonstrates the speed and ferocity of fire. This lesson then consolidates the prevention, detection and escape plan messages taught in year one. Part of this lesson is also dedicated to reducing anti-social behaviour – particularly hoax calls and arson.
Both the year one and six programmes have proved popular and successful and a recent evaluation (2004) of the input has shown the children to have a good level of knowledge retention from the lessons.
The programmes are designed to cause the least possible disruption to the schools timetable, by working with the school teachers, linking to curriculum subjects and visiting at an appropriate time for the school.
After a visit a letter is sent to the child’s parents or guardians explaining that their child has completed a fire safety course, and with their compliance they should complete a home fire safety check.
