We cover a geographical area of 538 sq. km, serving a population of 1.104 million across five local authority areas: Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.  

We put out fires, rescue people from road traffic collisions, water and rope rescue and many and other incidents. We also deal with major floods. We work to prevent fires from happening - providing fire safety education and advice to help people keep themselves, their homes and businesses safe.

To do this, we have a range of specialist equipment and specially trained people, including rope rescue, swiftwater rescue and expert teams to deal with large scale major incidents or disasters. We are equipped and trained to deal with terrorist incidents, including major chemical, nuclear, biological and conventional terrorist attacks as part of a country-wide network to provide national resilience.
