Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service covers a geographical area of 538 sq. km, serving a population of 1.09 million across five local authority areas: Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.  

We put out fires, rescue people from road traffic collisions and other incidents, and deal with major floods. We also work to prevent fires from happening in the first place, providing fire safety education and advice to help people keep their homes and businesses safe.

To do this, we have a range of specialist equipment and specially trained people, including rope rescue, swiftwater rescue and expert teams to deal with large scale major incidents or disasters. We are equipped and trained to deal with terrorist incidents, including major chemical, nuclear, biological and conventional terrorist attacks as part of a country-wide network to provide national resilience.

As well as providing an emergency response service, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service works to stop fires from happening in the first place to help create a safer community. This includes providing information and advice, for example:
