Equality and Diversity

The Service values and respects the diversity of its employees, and aims to recruit a workforce which represents the communities we serve. Our ability to protect the public through fire prevention, fire protection and emergency response depends on understanding the diverse communities we serve, and planning and delivering our services to take account of their needs. Valuing and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion are central to the effectiveness of the fire and rescue service in England. We welcome applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity.

We offer flexible working and other employee friendly opportunities.

We regularly assess our performance against the Fire and Rescue Service Equality Framework, accredited an ‘Excellent’ award. In 2018, Stonewall ranked us in the top 100 employer, one of two Fire and Rescue services within the list. We also gained fourth place and top public sector organisation in the Inclusive Top 50 Employer awards 2017, demonstrating our commitment to ensure we embed inclusion for all diversity strands.

To attract the right people for our service we practice robust and fair recruitment and selection processes in line with employment legislation, guidance from the Government Equalities Office and best practice. This includes the use of a National Firefighter Selection Process.

Our policies and procedures are in place to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and consistently at every stage of the recruitment process, including an invitation to the first stage of the selection process and consideration of reasonable adjustments for people who have a disability under the Disability Confident Scheme. However the testing process, the training course and the role of a Firefighter contains a high element of physical exertion.

To be a part of the TWFRS team there is no upper age limit for applicants, while the application age is 17½ years, you must be aged 18 years by the start of the Firefighter training as stipulated by Health and Safety regulations.
