Our Station
Built in 1965, Hebburn Community fire station is located on Victoria Road West, Hebburn and covers the west side of South Tyneside Metropolitan Council and part of Gateshead County Council South.
The station covers several council wards; Bede, Primrose, Boldon Colliery,Monkton and Fellgate and Hedworth, Hebburn North and South as well as Pelaw, Felling and Leam.
The fire station houses 2 fire fighting appliances and a Special Rescue Tender. There is a total of 70 firefighting and support staff. This station is one of only two that provide Tyne and Wear with a rope rescue capability in addition to the firefighters responding to all types of emergencies. The staff are also the main asset in undertaking a range of Community Safety (CS) activities that are primarily aimed at preventing fires and deaths and injuries in fires.
The station also houses a Northumbria Ambulance who’s staff work within the Station.
The Community Safety Centre at the rear of the Station houses the Community Safety Team and the Hebburn branch of the Young Firefighters Association (YFA). A Secondary Control Room for the Service is also shortly to be installed within a separate building to the main Station.
The Area
The population, based on South Tyneside council figures 2001, shows that approximately 68000 people live in the area, predominantly from an Anglo-Saxon background (97%) with small ethnic groups (3%) composed primarily of Asian, Black and Chinese. There are in the region of 30,500 homes with approximately: -
- 52.1% Owner occupied
- 37.7% Local authority rented
- 2.8% private rented
- 5.5% Housing associations
Single parent families occupy 9.1% of dwelling, with 17.1% single pensioner households. Also 29.9% of dwellings are households that have 3 or more dependant children. Levels of unemployment across the area are 12.5% for the male population and 6.8% for the female population. These figures reflect the socio-economic groups residing within the individual neighbourhoods which can link to the risk of dwelling fires occurring within the area. This is illustrated in the map where the red indicates areas where the risk of having a dwelling fire is well above average, orange is above average, yellow is average, blue is below average and green is well below average.

- Large Petro –Chemical Industrial Sites
- Large Underground Vehicular Tunnel
- Large National Sporting Venues
